Understanding the Difference Between Chamber Types

The International Hyperbaric Medical Association classifies hyperbaric chambers across three tiers.

Tier 1

Soft-shell units that typically reach a maximum of 1.3 to 1.4 ATA, delivering oxygen via a concentrator at around 90 to 95% through a mask.

Tier 2 - Inspiring Choices

We operate two hard-shell hyperbaric chambers: a Sechrist Industries chamber registered on the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods as ARTG 148448, and a Perry Baromedical chamber registered as ARTG 511953. Both are classified as Class IIb medical devices under TGA regulations. They are Tier 2 chambers capable of reaching 3.0 ATA and delivering 99.8% medical-grade oxygen via compressed cylinders throughout the entire chamber environment. TGA registration means the equipment meets the standards required for supervised clinical use in Australia.
What is the difference between your chambers and the soft-shell chambers available at wellness centres?
Our hard-shell chambers are rigid pressure vessels that reach 3.0 ATA and fill the entire chamber with medical-grade oxygen from compressed cylinders. Soft-shell or inflatable chambers are typically limited to 1.3 to 1.4 ATA and deliver oxygen via a concentrator through a mask at around 90 to 95% concentration. The combination of lower pressure and lower oxygen concentration means a Tier 1 soft chamber delivers a meaningfully different environment to what our Tier 2 hard-shell chambers provide. Is it safe to be inside a hyperbaric chamber?
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy has a well-established safety profile when conducted in a properly equipped and professionally supervised environment. At Inspiring Choices, a trained hyperbaric technician is present in the room throughout every session and our facility is equipped with full fire suppression systems. Both our chambers are manufactured to internationally recognised engineering and quality management standards for medical devices. Every new client also completes an eligibility assessment before their first session, which screens for any contraindications.
What does a session inside the chamber feel like?
As the chamber pressurises, you may notice a sensation in your ears similar to descending on a plane. This passes once the chamber reaches target pressure and can be managed by swallowing or gently equalising, which our team will explain before your session begins. Once at pressure, you simply breathe normally inside the chamber. You can rest, read, or sleep during the session, and your technician is present in the room throughout.
How long does each session take?
Your first session at our Gold Coast clinic is structured differently from standard ongoing sessions, with additional time for orientation and a practitioner review. Standard ongoing sessions run for approximately two hours in the chamber, with around 90 minutes at target pressure and the remaining time accounting for pressurisation and depressurisation. For your first visit, allow approximately two hours in total including your pre-session review. Your team will confirm the full timing during your eligibility assessment.
Do I need to bring anything or prepare in any way before my session?
Our team will give you a clear rundown of what to wear and how to prepare during your eligibility assessment and again before your first session. There are no complex requirements, but there are some practical guidelines around clothing, electronics, and personal items inside the chamber. You will be fully briefed before you enter.
