HBOT for Athletes and Active People

HBOT at Inspiring Choices - for Athletes and Active People

People who train, compete, or maintain an active lifestyle make up a portion of those who access HBOT at our Clear Island Waters clinic. This page describes who seeks HBOT in this context, what the assessment process involves, and what sessions at our Gold Coast facility look like.

HBOT Gold Coast - Athletic Context

Who Accesses HBOT in an Athletic or Active Context

A proportion of the people who access HBOT at Inspiring Choices do so in the context of their training, competition schedules, or ongoing physical activity. This includes people who train recreationally, those who compete at amateur or semi-professional levels, and individuals who maintain high levels of physical activity as part of their lifestyle.

These clients often enquire about HBOT after reading about how the therapy is accessed by athletes internationally, or following a recommendation from a practitioner involved in their care. Some are referred by sports physicians, physiotherapists, or GPs. Others self-refer after conducting their own research into what HBOT involves and what the equipment at different facilities delivers.

What all new clients at Inspiring Choices have in common, regardless of their background, is that they complete an eligibility assessment before any session begins. This is how we ensure that HBOT is appropriate for each person individually.

TGA-Registered Chambers

The Equipment We Operate at Our Clear Island Waters Clinic

Inspiring Choices operates two TGA-registered hard-shell hyperbaric chambers, both classified as Class IIb medical devices on the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods. Our chambers are Tier 2 units, pressurised to 3.0 ATA and filled with 99.8% medical-grade oxygen delivered via compressed cylinders throughout the entire chamber environment.

This distinction matters for clients who want to confirm that the equipment at a facility matches what they had in mind when they started asking questions about HBOT. Soft-shell or Tier 1 chambers, which are common at wellness centres and some sports facilities, operate at significantly lower pressures and deliver oxygen via concentrators rather than compressed cylinders. They do not deliver the same environment as a Tier 2 hard-shell chamber.

A trained hyperbaric technician is present throughout every session at our Gold Coast clinic, and full fire suppression systems are in place throughout the facility.

Assessment and Access

How to Access HBOT at Inspiring Choices

The starting point for every new client at Inspiring Choices is an eligibility assessment with one of our practitioners. This is not a formality - it is a thorough review of your health history, current circumstances, any medications or supplements you take, and the reasons and context behind your enquiry.

The assessment determines whether HBOT is appropriate for your individual circumstances and allows us to discuss the program options that suit your situation. We will not recommend HBOT - or any other service - unless we are satisfied it is appropriate for the individual in front of us.

Once your assessment is complete and HBOT is confirmed as appropriate, your first session includes a full orientation to the clinic and the chamber, with additional time built in so you feel informed and comfortable before you begin. Ongoing sessions are coordinated by the same clinical team and can be integrated alongside other Inspiring Choices modalities where relevant.

Integrated Clinic Environment

One Team, One Location, Coordinated Care

One of the features that distinguishes Inspiring Choices from standalone HBOT facilities is the range of integrative services available under one roof. Our clinic in Clear Island Waters brings together hyperbaric oxygen therapy, naturopathy, IV therapy, HOCATT, chiropractic, osteopathy, and functional neurology, all coordinated by a team that shares your case load and communicates across disciplines.

For clients who access HBOT in an athletic context, other modalities may be relevant to their broader circumstances. If so, they can be incorporated into a coordinated care plan without the need to manage multiple providers at different locations.

Your practitioners at Inspiring Choices are aware of the full picture of what you are doing at the clinic. Your care is coordinated rather than fragmented, and adjustments to your program are made collaboratively across the team.

Frequently Asked Questions - HBOT and Active People

What does an eligibility assessment for HBOT involve?
All new clients at Inspiring Choices complete an eligibility assessment with one of our practitioners before any HBOT session begins. This involves a thorough review of your health history, current training or activity schedule, any medications you take, and the reasons and circumstances that led you to enquire about HBOT. The assessment confirms whether HBOT is appropriate for your circumstances and allows us to discuss program options suited to your situation.
How long is each HBOT session?
Standard ongoing sessions at our Clear Island Waters clinic run for approximately two hours in the chamber, with around 90 minutes at target pressure and the remaining time accounting for pressurisation and depressurisation. Your first session is structured differently, with additional time built in for orientation and a practitioner review. Our team will confirm the full timing during your eligibility assessment.
Is HBOT appropriate for every person who trains or competes?
Not necessarily. HBOT is not a one-size-fits-all service and we do not recommend it without a thorough individual assessment first. Some people who train regularly enquire about HBOT as part of a broader approach to their health, while others are not suited candidates based on their individual circumstances. The eligibility assessment is the appropriate starting point for anyone considering HBOT, regardless of their background or activity level.
Do I need a referral from a sports doctor or GP to access HBOT at Inspiring Choices?
You do not need a referral to enquire or to book an eligibility assessment at Inspiring Choices. Some clients arrive with documentation from their GP, sports physician, or specialist, and we welcome that information as part of the assessment process. Others self-refer after researching HBOT independently. Regardless of how you find us, the eligibility assessment is the starting point for every new client.
What is the first step in finding out whether HBOT is right for my circumstances?
The first step is to contact our team at Inspiring Choices to discuss your circumstances and ask any initial questions about our services. From there, you would book an eligibility assessment with one of our practitioners. The assessment is where we gather the information needed to confirm whether HBOT is appropriate for you and to discuss which program options suit your situation. We do not recommend HBOT without first completing this assessment, and we will tell you clearly if we do not think it is the right fit.
